Rather like England’s New Forest, which received that name almost 1,000 years ago, Venice is full of things labeled novo, whose novelty is relative to the age of the city. The most important of these is the Strada Nova (New Street) which since its completion in 1871 has been the main thoroughfare from Venezia Santa Lucia train station (construction began in 1861) to the Rialto area.

Appropriately for a maritime city, the foot traffic on the Strada Nova comes in waves as tourists exit from the trains arriving at the station, and changes direction in the evening as the visitors ebb away.

As you may have remember from this post, Claudio was born and has lived in Venice all his life, but his parents are from Puglia in the south of Italy. Claudio’s nonne are therefore a great source of typical recipes from the south of Italy, which always end up being delicious.

I have a confession to make: I hate kneading dough. It’s probably the reason why I don’t make as much home made bread as I should considering I have an amazing wood-fired oven in my home which makes amazing bread. The problem is not the effort involved—I’m not lazy at all—but the fact that I have to do a single repetitive action for between 15 and 20 minutes.

If Bologna is the city of colonnades, Modena, its near neighbour is the city of bicycles. There are hundreds all over the town and are the preferred way for the locals to navigate the centro storico lending the city a tranquil air. There are also colonnades which give the town the look of a small Bologna but that’s where I will stop the unfair comparisons, for Modena is a city in its own right, with a proud history, and a very impressive culinary culture.
