Resurrection

A short post to wish you a Happy Easter and to give you a preview of things to come.

Our local town of Sansepolcro is very proud of its most famous son, Piero della Francesca, considered to be one of the leading artists of the early Renaissance and many of whose works remain in the town and the area. Chief amongst these is the Resurrection, painted on the wall of what is now the Museo Civico and depicting the object for which the town is named—Jesus’ tomb.

The painting itself depicts Christ at the moment of leaving the tomb, surrounded by sleeping guards, and looking right out of the picture at you the only witness. He’s draped in what was once red, the wounds of the crucifixion still fresh and a banner of victory in his hand. The background is unmistakably the area surrounding Sansepolcro at this time of year, the spring greens just beginning to replace the winter browns, particularly on the right of the picture, where there are oak trees.

For lunch today I cooked a lamb en croute, with freshly made puff pastry I learned to make in France. It was the first time I’d made it and I was very worried about not overcooking the meat, so you can imagine my delight when the knife crunched through the pastry and revealed meat as pink as in Jesus’ cloak above.

I only took this photo as I was hungry and entertaining, but it will probably come to the blog soon.
